The institution is the first college and at present the lead college in the Uttara Kannada District, was founded with the name "KANARA COLLEGE" on 20th June 1949 with the great efforts late Shri L. .S. Kamat, late shri. N.T.Hegde, late Shri. M.R. Dewekar and other local leaders. The great philanthrope late Dr. A. V. Baliga strengthened their hands.

The college was renamed as Dr. A. V. Baliga College to commemorate late Dr. Baliga's gesture of generosity. The college successfully celebrated Silver Jubilee in 1976 and Golden Jubilee in 2002.

College is both the place for learning and home for creativity. The core values of the college are aptly summed up in its emblem which bears the motto, 'PRAJWALITO JNANAMAYA PRADEEPAH'. The college is committed to imparting education with a spirit of social justice, integrity towards self and society and creativity in thought and approach. Our college library is the pride of the institution. It has a rare collection of books and manuscripts. The institution is geared up to provide an ambience of creativity and innovation with its well equipped laboratories, qualified staff and facilities for sports and co-curricular activities,.

Our college was felicitated with State Award a Rolling Shield for its sincere efforts in the 'National Small Savings Collection (NSSC) in the year 1965-66. Today, the students of this prestigious and pioneer institution are spread far and wide in metropolitan cities in Indiaand abroad as space scientists, international economists, eminent lawyers, research scholars, doctors and. teachers. The college was bifurcated in to Pre- university and Degree units in 2001.The student strength in the Degree course is around one thousand.

Recently new subjects are introduced in the U.G. Course like Bio-Technology, Sociology and Computer Science started in 2006. Certificate courses like DMLT, Industrial chemistry, Functional English and Pourohitya started in 2007. A new Post Graduate course in Analytical Chemistry started in 2009. Thus it has established itself as noteworthy centre with potential for Excellence and Distinction in Scholarship and Sports. Our college has produced 101 University Rank holders and 53 University Blues.


Dr. Umesh G. Shastri

M.A., M.Ed., Ph.D.

After joining the institution in 1983, Dr. Umesh Shastri served in the Department of Sanskrit as Associate Professor and later its head. He has participated in more than thirty National, International and State Level seminars, workshops and conferences as paper presenter or resource person. Published sixteen papers in different academic journals. Organized four National seminars and a State Level Workshop in the College. ‘Urubhangam’, which he edited with introduction and notes has been prescribed as a language text for B.Sc. course by Karnatak University, Dharwad. He has served as member of B.O.S. Dept of Sanskrit, K.U. Dharwad, as well as P.C. Jabin Science Autonomous College, Hubballi and Govt. First Grade College (autonomous) Karwar. He was also a member of the faculty of Arts, K.U. Dharwad. Trained as ‘Facilitator’ from CLHRD Mangalore; Dr. Shastri has conducted several HRD programmes in the College.
